Some vehicles get full redesigns on a 5-year cycle, but iconic models that have a lot of heritage often go much longer before they receive substantial updates. Like the Jeep Wrangler, for example! It just moved out of the JK generation into the JL after 10 years, and we gotta say the updates are great.
At a glance the exterior of the 2018 Jeep Wrangler JL doesn’t look too different from the previous generation, but if you get closer you'll see the changes. The biggest one is the seven-slot grille that Jeep is known far and wide for. It now has a notable curve and that helps make the off-roader slightly more aerodynamic and efficient. Designers also updated the headlights and taillamps and gave the Wrangler a nice body line down the side for a bit of flair.
Enthusiasts who like taking their Wrangler on tough trails will also notice the vent that rests above the fender. This is new for the JL generation and helps remove excess heat, which is important when you're working the Wrangler to its maximum capacity.
The new Wrangler is a touch softer around the edges. Nothing drastic, but enough to make the JK feel "boxier" in comparison. Engine wise, the 3.6L V6 Pentastar carried over, though it's slightly more efficient. However, there will be a 2.0L turbocharged option and a diesel variant come in 2019!
The interior is where you're going to see the most drastic visual updates. The Wrangler JL won't have the luxurious feel of the Jeep Grand Cherokee, but it's got more creature comforts and technology than the JK, which is on the sparse side.
You might have noticed that we're talking about the JK as if it's still around, and it is! For the 2018 year we'll be selling both side by side. If you prefer an interior with less bells and whistles, and are looking to save on buying or monthly lease payments, check out the JK. If you want more interior options and like the generation changes then go with the JL. Either pick is going to be a great choice!
