Wax will form a barrier against all the bad stuff and will protect your paint from wearing down.
If you decide to wash your car by hand, make sure that you choose your cleaning products carefully, as they can be harmful to your paint job. Use a soap that is formulated for cleaning cars, and a microfiber cloth when you apply wax. Don't ever skimp on the wax-it is your car's only barrier against all of the outside elements and will go a long way to preserving your paint.
