If you've been driving for a while, the task has almost certainly become second nature. Actions like checking over your shoulder as you signal to change lanes, waiting your turn at stop signs, and slowing down in school zones are all initiated with little thought. However, here at Ralph Sellers Chrysler Dodge Jeep, we know that even drivers with years of experience can be prone to anxiety when it comes to parallel parking. Thankfully, Scott Marshall, of the Safe Driver blog, has a pretty informative write-up on the topic. We have briefly summarize it for you, but the URL is below if you would like to read the whole post.
- Choose the right size space. Marshall suggests one that is 1.5 to 2 car lengths long, until you become more comfortable with the maneuver.
- Pull up three feet from, and slightly ahead of the lead parked vehicle. Be sure to use your turn signals and reverse lights to make known your intentions.
- Begin reversing very slowly until the rear corner of the lead parked vehicle is visible in the rear passenger-side vehicle, then begin steer all the way toward the curb.
- Once your vehicle is at a 45 degree angle to the curb, begin steering all the way to the opposite direction.
- Once in the space, adjust your position so there is equal room between you and the rear and lead parked vehicles.
Congratulations, you've done it! Now go spread the word.
